In seventh grade, we read Retrieving Reformation by O. Henry. This is a tale that teaches students to understand that even if we make mistakes or do something wrong- we can still change our behavior to do the right thing. It teaches them to see the lesson we should learn from our mistakes, to forgive ourselves and forgive others. The students enjoyed it and I highly reccommend it. Two of our accompanying activities for this short story were to create comic books about forgiveness, and a mock trial where we tried a case to decide whether the main character ws guilty or innocent. The students really enjoyed both activities. The trial allowed them to learn a little about the legal process, and step into specific roles as the defendant, defense attorneys, prosecutors, witnesses, jury, and a court reporter.
