For the Love of Art
In our World Literature course, we have read several stories that deal with hardship and various types of conflict in the world. One of those stories is Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Students analyzed characters, made connections, researched modern day refugee issues, learned about Afghanistan, and so much more. While reading this story, students were also given an activity menu to choose assignments that reflect events, themes, moods or characterization in chapters of the story. The choices were soundtrack compilation, art (drawing, painting, collage, mixed media), story rewrite, poetry, photography, or create an assignment. They really enjoyed this method and produced really excellent work. One of the art projects is pictured below. It was beautifully crafted by Cris, with just construction paper, glue sticks, and leaves from a synthetic house plant.
