Kite Running Competition

Last quarter, after reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, students enjoyed a kite running competition in the school yard. Intrigued by this important tradition in Afghanistan, we attempted it. The students enjoyed it, even though, not all the kites were able to float in the wind.
Kites were made using a myriad of materials including: construction paper, thin sheets of plastic, ribbons, pipe cleaners, poster boards, card board, bamboo, wooden dowels, coconut husks, and straws. Students worked in groups to ensure their kites were both creative, and durable. They featured the story's most important theme, turning point, character, and symbol. It was a fun interactive group project which required a lot of teamwork and problem solving.
